Sickness/Absence Management

Sickness absence costs the UK economy approximately £13bn per annum and during the past five years this level of cost has remained relatively constant.

That it is now considered an important issue by government is reflected in the recent establishment of a Task Force set up to review sickness absence in the public sector and to report and make recommendations on better ways of controlling it. The findings of this report are due to be published in the immediate term.

Managing sickness absence is a key responsibility of HR Managers and HR Seniors and much of the work EEF Occupational Health Service undertakes begins with a referral from the employer. This referral very often, originates from the HR, or Line Manager.

A Senior Occupational Health Nurse then reviews the referral and either passes it over to the appropriate Occupational Health specialist, or makes an appointment for the individual to see them.
